Therapeutic Horticulture with Microgreens for Guide Dogs Singapore

Therapeutic Horticulture with Microgreens for Guide Dogs Singapore

During our recent therapeutic horticulture session for Guide Dogs Singapore, I was reminded of how nature and plants are truly accessible to everyone. We began the workshop with a mindful invitation, asking participants to imagine themselves standing in a peaceful meadow. This gentle visualisation set a calming tone for the session, helping everyone connect with nature—even if only in their minds at that moment.

Throughout the workshop, participants explored microgreens in a hands-on way, using their senses of touch, taste, and smell. The participants were invited to engage with the microgreens and their seeds, exploring the textures and flavours of each. We also had fun mixing crackers, dips, and the microgreens together—turning it into a delicious snack. The food was so yummy, and it was great to see many participants asking for more!

This sensory-rich activity made the session not only enjoyable but also fulfilling, as it aligned with the goals of the workshop: to help participants learn new skills, improve motor coordination, and increase social connections. The broader aims of therapeutic horticulture—enhancing emotional and mental well-being, improving cognitive health, and nurturing a sense of calm—were also woven into every aspect of the experience.

The highlight of the session was how these small, simple plants provided such an accessible connection to nature. The participants were able to bring home their own microgreen kits, continuing the journey of growth and care at home. Watching the microgreens grow and eventually harvesting them extends the therapeutic benefits beyond the workshop itself.

For participants who have caregivers at home, we encouraged them to care for the microgreens together as a bonding activity. It’s a great way to connect through the shared act of nurturing plants. Additionally, we suggested they document their experience in a diary—tracking the growth of the microgreens and reflecting on the process together. This adds an extra layer of meaning and connection to the activity, making it a more engaging and mindful experience.

This session was a beautiful reminder that nature is available to all of us, offering peace, reflection, and growth—whether through mindful imagination or nurturing tiny plants in our own spaces.

We received wonderful feedback from the participants, with many expressing interest in similar workshops in the future. Several even asked for another round! It’s heartening to know that the session resonated so deeply and that the clients found such value in the experience. Knowing that the activities provided both enjoyment and a meaningful connection to nature makes me excited to continue offering workshops like this in the future.
